Many women have a problem with hyperpigmentation, which they recur every now and then. They cannot be removed with peels and cannot be masked under makeup. Is there any method by which you can get rid of these imperfections? Certainly yes. However, in order to effectively remove discolourations, you should learn what causes their formation.

How are hyperpigmentations formed?

Skin colour is determined by the natural pigment – melanin. The more pigment there is, the darker the skin. The amount of melanin in the skin depends, for instance, on race, place of residence and frequency of skin exposure to sunlight. The function of melanin is to protect the body and skin against UV radiation. The more we tan, the more our skin becomes brown or red. The tan admired by us is nothing but a defensive reaction of the skin to an irritating factor. Sometimes, however, the melanocytes, or cells responsible for the production of melanin, are disturbed. As a result, more dye is formed, melanocytes work more intensively, and thus discolourations appear.

Why do hyperpigmentations appear?

The causes of discolourations include:

  • lack of protection from the sun or use of cosmetics that are not effective,
  • hormonal imbalance,
  • the time when hormones work intensively (pregnancy, menopause),
  • the use of contraception or hormone replacement therapy,
  • skin reaction to the combination of some substance with UV rays,
  • use of some cosmetics,
  • infections of the skin,
  • some diseases,
  • skin aging.

Why do discolourations reoccur?

Now that you know how are discolourations formed, it is time to limit or completely reduce their causes. Lack of proper skin care, adequate protection and unhealed diseases, as well as disorders in the functioning of the body, lead to the reoccurrence of hyperpigmentations. Unfortunately, no cosmetics or treatment in the beauty salon will remove the future effects of sunbathing or other factors that cause such imperfections.
