The end of the winter season doesn’t mean we are no longer bothered by dry lips. In the spring and summer, the delicate skin on the lips gets much worse from the heat and burning sun. How can we care for the lips properly? Keep reading for our tips!

How and why do lips get dry and chapped?

Nobody likes it when the dry lips season starts. Whenever lips start losing moisture, we buy random products, hoping to find one that really works. In the meantime, we tend to lick the lips hoping for a little relief. Sadly, such relief doesn’t last long. When the saliva evaporates, it takes away some moisture from the lips, leaving them even drier.

Cold air fails to lock moisture in, which is why most of us experience much drier face and lip skin in the winter yet the dryness is as bothersome in the summer.

Lip care: things to avoid

To keep the lips healthy, we need to avoid some ingredients:

  • strong fragrance substances
  • menthol
  • camphora
  • phenol

Remember that matte lipsticks cause dryness as well so you need to avoid these or use them only when you are sure your lips are well maintained and deeply hydrated.

What to use on dry lips?

Protective lip balms are obvious yet their type matters a lot. Glycerin-based products have only superficial effects and may even cause more dryness in the long run. We need to get tried and trusted products that offer intensive repairing properties, e.g.:

  • La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Lip B5 – It moisturizes lips thanks to added shea butter and beeswax; it stays on lips long.
  • Mustela Nourishing Stick with Cold Cream – It is rich in shea butter, ceramides and bisabolol, makes a great cream for cold weather, perfect to use on lips as well as cheeks.
  • Karmameju Calm Balm 02 – It is a lip balm which includes shea butter, beeswax, pot marigold oil, vitamin E and sea buckthorn oil; a brilliant choice for sunburnt skin.
  • Neutrogena – It comes in a simple red tube which houses powerful nutrients and repairing ingredients, and its sweet taste will make your day!

Home remedies for chapped lips

In addition to ready-made lip products, there are many natural ingredients you surely have in the kitchen or bathroom working wonders and revitalizing the lip skin. For example, maybe you have shea butter or cosmetic oil (avocado oil, jojoba oil, argan oil, etc.) which are great conditioners for dry, chapped lips. Applying honey on the lips works wonders too: dab a thick layer and go to sleep – your lips will be soft and revitalized in the morning. To make products produce better results, you should use a lip scrub first – it removes dead skin cells, adds smoothness, and makes cosmetic ingredients sink in faster. You can use a drugstore scrub or mix some honey with sugar. Massaging the lips with a clean toothbrush works well too.
