Undoubtedly, silicones are very controversial ingredients often added to cosmetics. The followers claim that owing to silicones, the face is perfectly smooth, mattified and firm. However, the opponents consider them as skin-clogging substances that also interfere with the skin proper functioning. And how about you? Which side are you on?

Are silicones necessary?

You have probably noticed many times that after applying some cosmetics your skin is smooth and mattified whilst, the application of products is very pleasant and quick. Only silicone-based cosmetics provide such sensations. These ingredients can be found in anti-wrinkle, makeup and tanning cosmetics as well as in ointments. The biggest advantages of silicones are:

  • filling in and reducing the appearance of wrinkles,
  • providing cosmetics with durability and resistance to water,
  • protection against external factors by creating a physical barrier,
  • healing properties,
  • large stability – they do not lose their properties.

Are silicones dangerous?

According to the opponents, silicones:

  • they form an impermeable layer on the skin,
  • clog pores,
  • they contribute to the formation of dangerous bacteria,
  • they prevent proper functioning of the skin.

Is it really true? It turns out that no. Silicones are neutral substances to the skin, which means that they do not cause imperfections and do not inhibit skin function. After all, they are used in preparations that support wound healing and are often prescribed by doctors.

Silicones do not improve the skin condition

You may have thought that after using a product with silicone content, your skin was not properly moisturized and lost its glow after washing it. You must know that it was not a silicone fault. You probably did not prepare the skin the way you should have. You did not use a moisturizing or brightening cream. The role of silicone is not to take care of the skin, but to improve its appearance. Always keep this in mind when buying cosmetics with silicone content.
